Printing Terminology: Self-Mailer

A self-mailer is any printed piece that includes a space for postage and addresses on the piece itself, negating the need for an envelope.

If the piece is being printed on a digital press, you can take advantage of Variable Data Printing (VDP) to have addresses from your mailing list printed as part of the run. If you are working with an offset press, the space for postage and addresses can be left blank and that information can be applied or printed separately.

You’ve received self-mailers ranging from catalogs, folded brochures or flyers, newsletters, booklets, or postcards. Folded or multi-page pieces typically use a sticky tab or glue spot to keep them closed until you receive and “open” them. Perforated reply-cards, coupons, tickets, etc., can be included in multi-page pieces.

Advantages of a Self-mailer

Self-mailers negate the need and expense of separate envelopes as well as the labor of envelope-stuffing. When using VDP they also reduce or negate the need for additional printing and labor needed to place addresses and postage on the piece.

Skipping the envelope enables you to design an eye-catching presentation that’s instantly visible to the receiver. If you’re announcing a sale, for example, you can put that front and center and your customer is most likely to see that message simply by handling the piece. Long-time customers often look forward to periodic announcements of sales, performances, and the like.
