Printing Terminology: Soft Touch Finish

When considering a printed item, there are several finishing options available (e.g., aqueous coatings, UV coatings, laminates, etc.) that can add visual appeal and/or increase the durability and longevity of the piece. These types of finishes are generally geared to enhancing only the visual impact of the piece. A soft touch finish, on the other hand, is intended to invoke the sense of touch when handling the printed item.

What exactly is a Soft Touch finish?

As the term implies, a soft touch finish is one that gives a paper stock a velvety, smooth feel not unlike suede or chamois. Because it’s unique and unexpected, a soft touch finish gets attention. With high gloss, high sheen finishes being more prevalent, a soft touch finish stands out and invites repeated handling of the printed piece as it invokes sensations of luxuriousness and comfort.

How is a Soft Touch finish created?

Soft touch finishes are accomplished via two methods: 1) application of a coating; 2) application of a laminate. Soft touch finish coatings are applied as liquids that, when dry, create the soft texture. Soft touch laminates are a textured, plastic film bounded (like regular laminates) via heat and pressure to the printed piece.

What Soft Touch method is best?

Generally, the soft touch coating and laminate produce similar results. However, the liquid coating option costs less than the plastic laminate option. (The laminate provides greater protection and longevity which may justify the additional expense.)
