Book Printing: PUR Binding

Spines of a stack of books.

We’ve talked about softcover books and perfect binding, today we’re going to talk about an adhesive used in the perfect binding method on softcover books and known as PUR Binding.

What is PUR Binding?

Polyurethane Reactive (PUR) adhesive is a form of a hot melt glue that is the strongest, most long-lasting glue used in the perfect binding process. Once cured, PUR adhesive offers numerous advantages over other glues.

Advantages of PUR

  • Flexibility – The spine of the book won’t crack when its opened or pressed flat.
  • Strength – PUR creates an exceptionally strong bond between the interior pages and the cover making it exceedingly difficulte to pull pages out of the book.
  • Versatility – PUR adheres to all kinds of surfaces and substrates including those finished with varnish, UV, and aqueous coatings.
  • Endurance – PUR will maintain its integrity in environments ranging from extreme cold (-40° Farenheit) to extreme heat (200° Farenheit).
  • Non-Toxic – PUR contains no volatile organic compounds and is environmentally friendly.
  • Efficient – Because of its strength and performance, less PUR adhesive is needed to bind pages and book spines retain a nice, clean rectilinear shape.

When given the option, choose PUR as your preferred adhesive for perfect binding.
