Printing Terminology: Physical Mock-Up

Hand holding a theater program mock-up.

A physical mock-up is a sample version of your final printed piece.

A mock-up can be as simple as a digitally printed run-off of your business card or a full mini-press run of the piece, complete with die-cuts, applied coatings, special finishes, binding, folding, mini-folding, etc. The goal is to ensure the piece looks, feels and functions as anticipated, and provides the opportunity for a final thorough proofread / review.

Typically the mock-up will use the same paper stock / substrate, inks and finishes as will the finished product. Any problems arising in the production with respect to layout, finishing, shaping etc. can then be adjusted to ensure final printing will be successful.

Printed and Unprinted Mock-Ups

Printed mock-ups enable an evaluation of the layout of text and images as well as margin-widths and other elements, in addition to the physical construction of the potential piece.

Unprinted mock-ups (a.k.a. prototypes or dummys) focus on physical manipulations of the final piece irrespective of specific text or visual content.

Whether printed or unprinted the physical mock-up allows you to hold the piece in your hand and get a sense of how it will affect people: does it have the impact you seek?

Proof or Mock-up?

For many print jobs a digital proof in pdf format is sufficient for reviewing and proofreading, especially for repeat orders that will use the same materials. Physical mock-ups make sense for first runs of projects or complex print projects. Mock-ups may be included in your print cost or may generate a separate fee. Be sure to discuss this in advance.
