Printing: Large Format Maps

A hand pointing to a place on a large map.

Despite the existence of the online digital maps of Google and Apple, there is still a need for printed maps in this day and age. A custom printed map, whether sized to fit on a wall or folded to fit in a hip pocket, can provide details not found in their online equivalents. Also, a printed map is accessible to all and do not require an internet-connected device to view.

Large Format Printing

To produce a wall-sized map or a large map folded to a more manageable size (like many road maps) requires printing presses capable of handling large sheets of paper. In addition, folded maps require specialized folding equipment to create the multiple folds that can reduce a wall-sized map to a smaller, more portable format. Hence, check with your printer to see if they have the necessary equipment and expertise to print your custom map.

Who Needs Large Format Maps?

Many kinds and types of businesses and organizations find large format maps useful and, in many instances, necessary to provide information to their employees and the general public. Wall-sized maps are frequently found in health care facilities, government utility offices, public parks, etc. Folded maps are often provided as handouts to help visitors navigate complex building structures or crowded urban environments (e.g., university campuses, downtown entertainment districts), national parks, state parks, public parks, recreation areas, and other geographic areas with more specific detail (e.g., topographical features).
