Printing Technology: Holograms and Holographic Effects

Example of a holographic affect on a postcard.

Hologram technology has been around for several decades. In recent years, holograms have been appearing on currency, credit/debit cards, and business or personal checks as extra security measures to thwart forgery. Now, a new technology is making it possible to include holographic effects on printed pieces via the use of a film applied to UV coating during the curing process (and then removed) that embeds holographic patterns in the UV coating.

What is a Hologram?

In a printing context, a hologram is three-dimensional image created from a two-dimensional source or surface by the interference / interaction / reflection of light rays with a pattern embedded in the source / surface. Generally, for print, holographic technology is used to create visual effects and illusions (geometric patterns are popular) as opposed to replication of everyday objects, people, etc.

Why Use Holographic Effects in Print?

Holographic effects are simply another way to make your printed piece stand out and attract attention. For direct mail pieces like postcards, an eye-catching design and visual effect can insure your piece is read and not immediately discarded.
