Up until recently, most digital presses used toner as the medium to create images on the paper substrate. Now, digital inkjet printers are beginning to make inroads into the printing industry.
What is a Digital Inkjet Press?
As their name implies, digital inkjet presses apply ink to the paper substrate via nozzles or “jets” that apply a very fine dot to the paper. Inkjet technology has long been used in desktop printing devices and is capable of producing high quality images with resolutions of 1200 dpi. However, inkjet technology, until now, was not a particularly speedy way of printing images — most desktop inkjet printers could only produce a few pages per minute. The new digital inkjet presses, offered in both sheet and web-fed models, are capable of producing thousands of images per minute like standard web offset presses. And, they can do so at resolutions as high as 1200 dpi on coated and uncoated paper in a broad range of weights from text to cover and card stocks.
Variable Data Printing
Because these newer inkjet presses are digital, each sheet passing through the press can be printed with variable data meaning, particularly for direct mail marketing, each piece can be custom-printed with a recipient’s name, address, etc.
