In our ongoing discussion of various book-binding methods, we’ve touched upon perfect binding, saddle stitch binding, and spiral/coil and comb binding. Today we’ll talk about ProClick Binding.
What is ProClick Binding?
Developed by the General Binding Corporation, the ProClick Binding method is similar to spiral/coil binding in appearance and function, but operates like the mechanism in a three-ring binder: the rings can open and close making it possible to add or remove pages. As with spiral/coil binding, holes/slots are drilled or punched through the cover and inside pages and the ProClick rings are inserted.
However, unlike spiral/coil binding, ProClick binding offers only four color choices (navy, black, frost, white) and three ring sizes (5/16”, 1/2”, 5/8”). Spine dimension has an 11” maximum which means bound books cannot exceed 11” in either a vertical or horizontal orientation. The maximum number of bound pages is determined by the weight of the paper chosen and the selected ring size. Generally, this method is intended for books of 250 pages or less.
Advantages of ProClick Binding
- ‘Like with spiral/coil binding, a ProClick bound books can be opened a full 360° and can be folded back on itself while still laying flat. This is ideal for books where content needs to be referenced quickly and repeatedly. Or, in a hands-off situation like with a cookbook, automotive manual, instruction book, etc.
- ‘Pages can be removed or added.
- Index tabs can be readily included to make it easy to find and access content. Index tabs/page dividers are particularly useful for reference books and/or other documents where information should be located quickly.
