In the printing industry, softcover refers to any kind or style of book with a flexible paper cover. This definition includes paperback books, magazines, booklets, etc., as well as the books found in your local bookstore or library. In most instances, the paper stock used for a softcover book is of a heavier weight than the stock used for the interior pages yet not so thick as to render the paper non-flexible or pliable.
Most softcover books are perfect bound (We’ll be writing a post about perfect binding in the near future!) but other binding methods, like saddle stitch and spiral coil are not uncommon. In fact, the term softcover binding is sometimes used as another designator for a softcover book.
Why are Softcover Books Popular?
Softcover books are less expensive and require less time to produce than hardcover books which makes them the most common choice for book publishers. And, with the rise of digital printing presses and print-on-demand services, publishing a softcover book is affordable and easy to accomplish.
