When sending marketing pieces via the mail, postal regulations require folded pieces, multi-page booklets, etc., remain folded or closed during the sorting and mailing process. To make this possible, printers deploy several methods ranging from stickers and tabs to non-permanent or temporary glues. Fugitive glue falls under the latter category.
What is a Fugitive Glue?
Fugitive glue is a glue formulated with a significant proportion of alcohol applied wet to the paper substrate to be bonded. As the alcohol evaporates, the bond the glue forms becomes less intense yet retains enough strength to hold the paper together. In essence, fugitive glue creates a temporary bond that can last through the sorting and mailing process, yet be easily broken by the recipient without causing damage to the piece. Some fugitive glues are formulated to be pressure-sensitive — like certain tapes or post-it notes — enabling a piece to be resealed after it’s been opened.
