Printing Terminology: Aqueous Coating

Pile of brochures and magazines with shiny covers due to aqueous coatings.

Continuing on the topic of coatings as in our previous post about UV coatings, today we’ll talk about another popular coating option, aqueous coatings.

Like UV coatings, aqueous coatings provide a protective layer to commonly printed items like brochures, business cards, postcards and flyers. Aqueous coatings enhance the appearance of a printed piece by making colors “shiny”and more brilliant and they protect the piece from handling damage, scratches, etc.

Applied on the press during the print run, aqueous coatings dry fast which does not greatly impede post-press operations like cutting or folding. Also like UV coatings, aqueous coatings are available in a variety of sheen levels including matte, gloss, and high gloss. Plus, an aqueous coating resists cracking if the piece is subjected to bending or stress.

Aqueous coatings are water-based and are thus less expensive and more beneficial to the environment than other varnishes.
