Printing Terminology: Die-Cut Decals

Shows a cut out of a spider-shaped die-cut decal on top of a pile of decals in several shapes.

First, What is a Decal?

Decals can be thought of as a somewhat more permanent form of a sticker or label. Decals can be printed on a variety of substrates including plastic, vinyl, or metal foil making them ideal for outdoor applications. In addition, decals can be printed with a variety of eye-popping colors and finished with a high-gloss sheen for extra brilliance.

Die-Cut Decals

While decals can be made using standard dies with common shapes like circles, starbursts, triangles, etc., decals really come alive when they’re made from custom dies (see spider in image above). A die made in the shape of a company logo, a team mascot, a primary product offering or service (e.g., a car, coffee cup, etc.) can make your decal extra special!

Kiss-Cutting

Die-cut decals can be made as individual decals with the die cutting the shape of the decal along with its backing sheet. Or, by using a process known as kiss-cutting, the die cuts only the perimeter of the decal leaving the backing sheet and making multiple decals available on a single sheet.

Laser Cut Decals

When a small quantity of decals is needed, it can be more cost-effective to opt for a laser-cut decal. A laser can cut any shape a die can cut and doesn’t incur the cost of having a custom die made. However laser-cutting is a one-at-a-time process so is not cost-effective for large quantities.
