Printing Terminology: Kiss-Cut Labels

Elaborately shaped label with "hello" and a smiley face, held in a hand.

Anyone who has purchased a book of postage stamps in recent years has encountered a label (or sticker) created using the kiss-cut method.

What is a Kiss-Cut Label?

Traditional self-adhesive labels are made with a backing material or liner that is peeled-off before the label is applied. A kiss-cut label works somewhat in reverse, in that the label is peeled-off from the backing material. Kiss-cut labels are made with a metal die that cuts and defines the edge of the label but only penetrates through the depth of the label itself leaving the backing liner intact. This method creates labels that can be arranged and printed in sheets (or made into rolls) allowing for labels to remain on the sheet or roll until they’re needed. The big advantage to the kiss-cut method is it allows for labels to be created with practically any kind of shape or outline. Rather than a square or rectangle, a kiss-cut label could be made in the shape of a bird, a boat, a plane, a car, a dog, a cat, etc.
