If you’ve purchased over-the-counter or prescription medicines, various electronic devices, toys, cosmetics, or other small items, then you’ve likely encountered a printed sheet of instructions (often in multiple languages) or boilerplate legal language folded to fit the limited confines of the packaging. Taking a larger sheet of paper and folding it several times to reach a small size is known as miniature folding (mini-folding).
Who Uses Miniature Folding?
As mentioned above, pharmaceutical, electronics, and cosmetics manufacturers are the most common types of businesses or industries that utilize miniature folding. However, any instance where a a lot of information needs to be included with a product in a small package is a good candidate for miniature folding.
Most miniature folded sheets are printed in one color (black) or two colors (black and a spot color) on white paper stock. Because the goal is to cram as much information as possible into a small pace, type is set at eye-straining sizes (6pt, 5pt, or even 4pt) and black ink on white provides the most clarity and resolution.
Unlike the more common folding options available, miniature folding requires specialized equipment most printing companies do not keep on hand. In addition, miniature folding requires a specific lightweight paper stock that can be readily folded multiple times without becoming too bulky. In some instances, a small amount of adhesive may be required to make sure a tightly folded sheet doesn’t inadvertently unfold.
