Printing Terminology: Sequential Numbering

Printing press device for sequential numbering.

One of the more common methods used to provide unique identification and tracking ability to a printed piece is to have a number printed on the document. A wide variety of printed forms, including invoices, receipts, purchase orders, order forms, etc., are frequently numbered to enable easy tracking and identification for accounting purposes. Sequential numbering, in the printing industry, simply refers to the process of printing numbers in sequence, or consecutively, on a document. For example, a company might order a print run of 5000 copies of a frequently used document or form and have them sequentially numbered beginning with 0001 up to 5000. Or, in continuation from a previous printing, the numbering might start at 5001 and end at 9999.

Sequential Numbering Examples

Other common types of printed items frequently printed with sequential numbers are inventory, repair, and inspection tags, raffle tickets, and checks (personal or business). The numbers can be printed in multiple places on a document or item and are often printed in color to make them more visible and easily read.
