Printing Terminology: What is Householding?

Mailbox.

As postage rates have risen in the past few years, looking for ways to save on mailing costs has become a priority for many businesses. One such way to save on postage is using a method known as householding.

What is Householding?

Householding is the idea of putting two or more pieces to be mailed in one envelope as opposed to sending separate envelopes for each piece.

How Does Householding Work?

By examining mailing lists, companies can identify instances where more than one recipient resides at the same mailing address. Rather than send multiple pieces to the same address in separate envelopes, it may be possible to combine them in one envelope. For many promotional pieces, this makes perfect sense. However, there may be instances, depending on the nature of the piece to be mailed, where federal regulations require separate mailings.
