Striking looking business card with dark background and logo and red trim.

Business cards are the workhorses of self-promotion and marketing. As such, having a business card that gets noticed and attracts attention is more likely to be retained by potential customers, clients and business partners. Here are some suggestions on how to make your business card stand out from the crowd.

1) Different Size – The vast majority of business cards are sized at 3.5” x 2” to fit a standard wallet. Choosing a custom size slightly larger (e.g., 4” x 2.5”, 4” x 3”, 4.5” x 3.5”, etc.) will differentiate your card from others. Even a basic fold-over business card (3.5” x 4” unfolded) is less common and will be noticed.

2) Choose Unique Substrate – Business cards can be printed on substrates other than paper like magnets, plastic/vinyl, synthetic paper, cardboard, or metal. Even a non-generic or common paper stock (e.g., recycled uncoated card stock) can make a business card unique and different.

3) Add QR CodeQR codes make it easy for recipients of a business card to access a company or organization’s website, even a specific page on the website like a biography of the cardholder or to a social media page, etc.

4) Special Finishes – From embossing, foil-stamping, die-cutting, and 3D holograms to spot UV and, soft touch coatings, adding a unique finish or feature to your business card will separate it from the pack.

5) Add Your Photograph – Adding a face to a name not only helps a card recipient cement your identity in their mind, it is also a way to make your card unique

6) Use Color – Whether printing in full color, spot colors, or combinations of colored substrates with spot colors, stepping away from designs where a white paper stock is the predominant element of the presentation makes your business card memorable.
